Rev. Johnny L. Jones: The Hurricane That Hit Atlanta

Performed by Rev. Johnny L. Jones and Congregation

41 archival recordings from Rev. Johnny L. “Hurricane” Jones, culled from more than 1,000 tapes dating back to 1957.

Rural Alabama preacher Jones moved to Atlanta in the mid-1950s and has been swaying congregations ever since with distorted guitars, walking bass, clapping choirs, pew stomping, & beleaguered microphones overdriven with the fury of his faith. Excerpts from his radio show which include ads for funeral homes, calls with parishioners, rave-up songs full of feedback, sermons- the full experience, including some electrifying performances by ladies in the congregation.

“A hurricane is a force of nature with which to be reckoned, unapologetic, a mighty storm in force, speed, and effect. These descriptors hold true for Reverend Johnny L. Jones, nicknamed ‘Hurricane’ because of his larger than life delivery of the word of God.” — Kevin Coultas, Other Music
