Art of Field Recording [Sampler CD]

Art of Field Recording: Volume IThe diverse talents of both Art and Margo Rosenbaum have allowed them to document music traditions in a way few others could have done. Art is a painter, muralist, and illustrator, as well as a collector and performer of traditional American folk music. Margo is a photographer that has captured many of Art's field recording encounters.

With this CD, Dust-to-Digital proudly presented a sampling of music from two forthcoming box sets with the Rosenbaums. The sampler CD was released in conjunction with an exhibition of Art's paintings and drawings at the Georgia Museum of Art.

Excerpts from Selected Reviews

Blues Rag: "Even after 50 years of combing town and country for sounds to feed his tape deck, songcatcher Art Rosenbaum's heart must still pump adrenaline with each new knock on a screen door. It's a natural response to the flood of anticipation generated at what blues, folk, old-time, or gospel discovery might await on the other side. And as Art of Field Recording shows, his onsite recording sweeps have yielded an absolute bounty of American traditional music in the raw. So much so that the 24 one-of-a-kind moments here represent only the very tip of the iceberg, a tasty sampler of the complete mother lode due later this year."

Time Out New York: "Rosenbaum isn't primarily an archivist; his work as a painter, art professor and folk musician seems to have informed his searching more than mere academic drive to trace musical history as far back as possible. Thus nearly all of the 24 pieces here — from stately yet raw blues to fiery fiddling stompers — are stirring affairs, and you won't need a Ph.D. in country-R&B to get it."
